Tahitian black pearls are formed inside the black-lipped Pinctada margaritifera. The interior shell of this oyster is covered by a thick layer of black nacre. When a pearl forms against this layer, it soaks up the dark color; the nearer to the shell, the darker the pearl becomes. Pearls that form further away from the shell tend to develop a silvery-gray color.
Pearls farmers have found a way to replicate this process to produce black, or silver-gray pearls, without the need to dye them. One such example is Edison pearls, which you can find in our shop together with Tahitian and South Sea black pearls.
