You’re used to seeing messages of Black Friday specials popping up during this season, but have you ever wondered how it all started? Why is Black Friday such a big shopping day with crazy-good discounts?
We decided to go back in time to find out what happened.
The earliest record of Black Friday as we know it now originated from Philadelphia. The police coined this phrase due to the heavy traffic on the day after Thanksgiving, causing traffic accidents and sometimes violence. This day was a busy shopping day even before it got the name. In the 1950s, people started to call in sick the day after Thanksgiving to give themselves a four-day weekend, and many of them went shopping for Christmas.
Although the Philadelphia police came up with this clever name for the day, that wasn’t the first time the words ‘Black Friday’ was used. On September 24, 1896, the stock market crashed due to an attempt by a group of speculators to drive up the gold price. The day was ‘black’ for many, hence the name.
Since so many shoppers were hitting the streets on the day after Thanksgiving, retailers decided to cash in on this trend. Even before they started offering heavy discounts, retailers made a lot of sales on this day, often enough to put them in the ‘black’ for the year, or in other words, making a profit.
Retailers wanted to put a positive spin on the name and wanted to encourage even more shoppers to hit the stores on Black Friday, so they started to embrace the name and offered generous discounts that are only available on that day. And it sure paid off. Today, Black Friday is synonymous with great deals on almost anything you want.
Unfortunately, with this craze also came violence as people didn’t want to miss out on a great deal. In the last decade or so, we’ve seen an uptick in violence which also caused a number of deaths. We’re not a supporter of the violence, but luckily, you don’t need to leave your house to take advantage of our Black Friday deals. You can browse our online shop from the safety of your home, and you don’t even have to get stuck in the crowds or stand in a queue!
